Excerpt from the Book

3. The Perception of the American Way of Life Through “Mypods and Boomsticks”

The episode starts with the Simpsons family at the shopping mall. They want to bring back presents from Christmas and they are witnesses of how the next feast, Martin Luther King Day, is prepared. Entering the “Mapple” store, they are impressed by the technology which is presented there. Lisa urgently wants to possess something of the company but she cannot afford even the cheapest earphones. Nevertheless she gets a “Mypod” from Krusty and Homer is occupied with a “Mycube” while Bart is haunted by the people who support Mapple because he played a joke on the founder of Mapple. He meets his new friend Bashir when he runs through Springfield looking out for a hiding place.

When Bart and Bashir are on their school way Bashir tells Bart that he is a Moslem and Bart cannot believe that and tells him not to tell that to the rowdies. But the rowdies get to know it and want to beat him up. Bart is then reasonably telling them that every one of them has another religion or belief.

Bashir impresses Homer with his good education. Homer tells his friends in Moe´s pub about Bashir and his family and his friends convince him that Bashir and his family are assassins. At the beginning Homer cannot believe that but after a fictive TV program show he also supports the idea.

In the following night he dreams of Moslems destroying or changing everything that the Western countries have built up so far. Because of this dream he decides to invite Bashir and his family for dinner. At the dinner he insults them and chases them off with the excuse that it is so easy and funny to judge people because of their religion.
