The Wage Gap: Highly Exaggerated

The United States has crawled its way through the deepest of segregation and discrimination; from women’s rights to Japanese internment camps. The latter, is still and issue that some find prevalent today, especially when wages are concerned. For those who are unaware, the wage gap or the pay gap is this: “In 2013, among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 78 percent of what men were paid”1 stated by Catherine Hill with the American Association of University Women. As far as I’m concerned this is merely a case of miscalculation and exaggeration to get a movement across. But, before going any further, there are a few things that should be clarified. Firstly, the argument being challenged is not the term wage gap; but however, the many reasons and conclusions made by many people to conclude that women are paid less than men. Secondly, no one disputes the fact that women on average earn less than men, now this is important. Lastly, as to give these points some extra weight, I’ll be using the American Association of University Women’s paper, “Graduating to a Pay Gap: The Earnings of Women and Men – One Year after College Graduation.” Seeing as this is a feminist organization, using this source to disprove the wage gap would be like using the bible to disprove religion.
