This is an essay of the common misconceptions in society that are often perpetuated by feminist and those of the like. A persuasive intended speech for a debate class that over-views the statement that, "women earn 77 cents to the dollar that a man earns." This is however false, and exaggerated. One must look at this in an economic sense to decipher how this statistic is given.

Objectives and Topics

The objective of this paper is to critically evaluate the common "78 cents to the dollar" wage gap statistic by analyzing underlying economic factors, labor statistics, and the distinction between being "paid" versus "earning."

  • The differentiation between salary/payment and total annual earnings.
  • The impact of career choices, hours worked, and negotiation skills on wage disparities.
  • Evaluation of data from the American Association of University Women and the U.S. Department of Labor.
  • The influence of maternity leave and gender-specific employment trends.
  • The economic rationale for why corporations seek profit over discriminatory hiring.

Excerpt from the Book

The Wage Gap: Highly Exaggerated

The United States has crawled its way through the deepest of segregation and discrimination; from women’s rights to Japanese internment camps. The latter, is still and issue that some find prevalent today, especially when wages are concerned. For those who are unaware, the wage gap or the pay gap is this: “In 2013, among full-time, year-round workers, women were paid 78 percent of what men were paid”1 stated by Catherine Hill with the American Association of University Women. As far as I’m concerned this is merely a case of miscalculation and exaggeration to get a movement across. But, before going any further, there are a few things that should be clarified. Firstly, the argument being challenged is not the term wage gap; but however, the many reasons and conclusions made by many people to conclude that women are paid less than men. Secondly, no one disputes the fact that women on average earn less than men, now this is important. Lastly, as to give these points some extra weight, I’ll be using the American Association of University Women’s paper, “Graduating to a Pay Gap: The Earnings of Women and Men – One Year after College Graduation.” Seeing as this is a feminist organization, using this source to disprove the wage gap would be like using the bible to disprove religion.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction to the Debate: This section introduces the common narrative regarding the wage gap and sets the stage for a critical examination of the supporting statistics.

2. Analysis of the Wage Gap Statistic: This chapter differentiates between legal pay requirements and average earnings, arguing that the 78-cent figure misrepresents actual market conditions.

3. Contributing Factors and Mathematical Disparities: The author breaks down how variables like hours worked, job selection, and negotiation behavior account for the vast majority of the observed earnings gap.

4. Conclusion and Economic Perspective: The final section argues that the focus should shift toward STEM education and empowerment, while challenging the logic that corporations would avoid hiring cheaper labor if the gap were truly discriminatory.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary focus of this work?

The work focuses on challenging the widely cited statistic that women earn 78 cents for every dollar a man earns by analyzing the variables that contribute to earnings disparities.

What are the central themes of the paper?

Central themes include the distinction between pay and earnings, the impact of professional and personal life choices on income, and the role of economic incentives in the labor market.

What is the core research question?

The author questions whether the commonly cited wage gap is a result of systemic discrimination or a misinterpretation of aggregate data that ignores key career and life factors.

What methodology does the author employ?

The author uses a comparative analysis of public research papers, specifically citing data from the American Association of University Women and the U.S. Department of Labor, to isolate variables like hours worked and job roles.

What does the main body address?

The main body addresses the mathematical flaws in simplistic wage gap calculations and explores how factors like maternity leave, negotiation skills, and different occupational fields account for the statistical difference.

Which keywords best describe this research?

Key terms include Wage Gap, Pay Gap, Earnings, Labor Statistics, and Economic Incentives.

How does the author define the difference between "earned" and "paid"?

The author asserts that being "paid" differently for the same work is illegal under the Equal Pay Act, whereas "earning" less is a result of various professional and life choices, such as hours worked or negotiation outcomes.

Why does the author suggest that focusing on STEM fields is more productive?

The author argues that encouraging women to enter higher-paying STEM fields is a more effective way to address income inequality than focusing on a statistical gap that may be largely explained by current career choices.

What logic does the author use regarding corporate hiring practices?

The author points out that since corporations prioritize profit, it would be economically irrational for them not to exclusively hire women if they were truly 23 percent cheaper to employ than men.
