Abstract

The introduction of social media has affected the way people communicate with each other; individual can communicate over a wide range of distance through social media. This research focus on face book which one of the most used social media, questionnaire and field observation was conducted during the research to determine how university students interact with their phones that have face book install in it and how this interaction affect person to person communication among students. Results indicated that the usage of face book has negatively affected person to person communication among university student and also most of the student are aware of these negatives impact yet they are glue to face book even in the presence of their peers.

Introduction

The inflow of student into higher place of learning has increased over the years an many colleges and universities has been opened to meet the new demand , educational provider have taken interest on how to use the various social media network software for academic purpose (Gunawardena et al. 2009). Basically when Facebook which is of the most used social network site was created, its purpose was for the socialization of students in the university but Facebook options make it simple and easy for internet users to build up and keep personal profile page, connect with and comment on friends and other people, upload content, contribute to team and take part in on-line communities communication (Jenkins et al. 2006).

According to Nadkarni and Hofman (2012): Another important Facebook component that makes it unique is its ability to gives access to the other users at the other end to make display that are public and can link various viewers through internet connections by just clicking on a page or profile. Face book wall is another feature of face book that acts as bulletin board that gives access to users to upload messages for other viewers to see, this message sometimes reflects the thoughts of the individual posting it. Facebook pokes gives user option to offer greetings to end users, the status functions gives users to update their peers where they are and what they are thinking. Events is another features that allows users to organize events and makes plans and give invites to others, videos and photo gives users the option to upload their photos, pictures, albums, videos and graphics for others to make comment of what they think about the uploads, messages between friends gives them the opportunity communicate between teach other, there are both private and public domain for interaction and also there is a chat forum. For individuals that like to form team and bong among themselves, the group features enable these access, other features include the like feature that enables users to like a particular picture or comment posted.

Different researchers has pointed the effects of social media ant technology, the popularity of social network sites among student in the university has increased. More and more students are using the social network for academic purpose and for conducting research. According to Carusa and Salaway (2000), 49.7% of students in United States use social network sites to interact with colleagues and course mates about topics that relates to their course work while Ipsos MORI (2008), studies reveal that in the United Kingdom 37% of student in their first years use these social network sites to deliberate about their course work and 81% of those are actively using these sites for learning purposes.

The different features provided by Facebook can be useful for students to interact and communicate within themselves and develop in which they socialize and do researches on their academic work (Pempek et al. 2009). There is a presumption the features and options in Facebook might revitalize students engagement in been creative and facilitate their learning process that goes beyond the old educational pattern (Wiberg 2007, p. 10), and thus it is given benefits for the access to various to various source of getting information and also better communication opportunities (Dron & Anderson 2007).

Despite the features and interactive that Facebook possess it is still blur to ascertain of the usage of Facebook as effective for learning process, Facebook might create a boundary between studying in one hand and socializing and this might not lead to effective learning. The frequent use of Facebook by students might develop frail communication with fellow student and they might find it difficult and hard to build and form a supportive association within themselves (Ellison et al. 2007). According to Bugeja (2006) many of the Facebook users become hook and obsessive to it.

Social Media

Social media consist of various activities involving associating and networking on the internet through videos, chatting, pictures, calls and word, social media has refine the way people relate with each other’s and with organization in which they work it is a two way discuss in which information can be shared and leant (solis,2008).

The social media has dramatically affected our society in different ways , it has affected the way individual interact and communicate and also have an effect on their relationship , it does this by allowing the users easy access to each other and enable them to share and create information during interaction, it provide that ease and freedom that allows the users to express themselves easily, in the words of Cavico et al (2013), “social media consists of web-based internet networks where users can share information and communicate with other users in a collective manner” (p. 26). More so Smith (2012) definition of social media quoted that “social interactions using technology (such as the internet and cell phones) with any combination of words, pictures, video, or audio” (p. 24). Smith (2012) also pointed that this shared activities allows the Facebook users the chance to “communicate, socialize, sharing email, documents, pictures, video, audio files, and do each in a number of different ways” (p. 24). Different platform have been created by social media that has changed the way people, family and friends communicate with one another, platform such as twitter, Facebook, Instagram, my space has change the way we once communicated especially in sharing and sending messages tailored for specific reasons, although Facebook is much poplar and is especially tailored for communication among friends and colleagues (Fischer and Reuber ,2011).

Twitter is also very popular for communicating, it was founded in 2006 and since then it has gain lots of attention because it of its “ability to communicate in real-time short messages”, which permits users to “relate by ‘tweets’” (Waters & Williams, 2011, p. 354). While comparing Facebook usage to twitter usage, Gelms (2012) pointed out that “social media is even more noticeable among the fastest growing private companies in the United State, eighty-three percent of these companies utilize at least one form of social media, fifty-nine percent have corporate twitter accounts and 71% had a corporate Facebook profile” (p. 268).

Statement of problem

The usage of social media has been on the increase especially in developing country, as more and more people has access to technology and internet service so has the use of social media has risen, technological advancement has been continue grown and new innovation is been introduced into our society , also “Recent advancements in communication technology have enabled billions of people to connect more easily with people great distances away, yet little has been known about how the frequent presence of these devices in social settings influences face-to-face interactions” (Przybylski & Weinstein, 2012, p. 1). Many research has been carried out on how technology has affected the marketing industry and how the social media can be used as a marketing communication tools but few has focused on the impact of social media on university student communication within themselves and in relation to their faculty, social media has been extensively used as a marketing communication tool and as a means of advertisement for marketers and promoter but little has dwelled on how it affect universities students communication.
