“Colonialism breaks things…the self of the colonizer explodes a native cultural solidarity, producing the spiritual confusion, psychic wounding, and economic exploitation of a new and dominated other” (Houston A. Baker, Jr. PMLA Forum ). Colonialism refers to the cultural and economic exploitation. This essay details how the process process of colonialism unfolded in Africa and how it impacted the lives of people socially, economically, politically and culturally as well as how postcolonial writers attempt to reverse these impacts.
The effects of colonialism began with the economic interest that the West defended in their seizure of foreign territories for the exploitation of its natural resources: a situation which had the contradictory (negative) effects on the browbeaten colony ( Meredith 2005: 95-97). Above and beyond the economic imbalance, Western profited at the detriment of the weak Africa ,as a results of colonialism; the social, cultural and political lives of the people and societies in Africa were greatly intermittent and distorted by the policies applied by the colonial masters during the colonial period.
