Excerpt from the Book

Nature and intensity of the rivalry amongst competitors

When examining the intensity of rivalry amongst competitors you must take into consideration that the industry is still in the early stage of development. In the area of smart devices are several competitors. There are big ones with a similar size and smaller ones with unequal size. The unequal size of competitors and their unequal market share indicate a low rivalry amongst the competitors. Another argument is that the industry is still growing rapidly. At a first glance, it seems that the rivalry in the smart home industry is low.

Having a closer look, you can see that the rivalry is rather high although the market is still in the early stage of development. This is because now the few big competitors must settle the fundamentals to become market leader. Visions, partnerships and technological decisions, which can influence your position within this industry in the future, have to be made. Today the products are not significantly differentiated. Therefore, the quality difference is very small, which increases the rivalry. The switching costs differ depending on one condition. When just switching to different devices which are compatible to your current ecosystem then one must pay only the price of the device. But switching the entire ecosystem can be very costly. This argument is also valid when evaluating the threat of new entrants and of substitute products. Another point is that there are opportunities to extend the value proposition beyond products to valuable data and special services. Furthermore, new rivalries emerge because the smart home industry connects companies form different industry branches which haven’t been competitors beforehand.
