Excerpt from the Book

2.2 Ownership problem

With the exception of Juventus FC, having opened their own new stadium in 2011, no Italian club in the Serie A is owner of their stadium at this point of time. The stadiums are owned by the municipalities, which emerged to be a big disadvantage. It leaves the clubs with almost no power to decide about the usage of the facilities and robs them of the opportunity to generate revenues like those of club restaurants, permanent fanshops, stadium tours or luxury boxes and results in the lack of additional services. So, the revenues clubs can generate from the stadium are limited to matchday revenue which causes the Italian clubs to miss out on a lot of money. The revenues generated by the exploitation of stadia in Italy are more than 20 percent less than in the other top European leagues. Especially corporate hospitality revenues are very low in Italy (Baroncelli & Caruso, 2011). Also, events like concerts sometimes even harm the clubs interests (Baroncelli & Lago, 2006). In the case of Juventus FC the new stadium can even include a shopping centre (Palvarini & Tosi, 2013). All this underlines the need of stadium ownership in the Italian league. The clubs can not afford to miss out on these revenues.
