Excerpt from the Book

Organometallics

The compounds in which a metal or metalloid is bonded directly to carbon are called organometallics. Here, carbon is present in an organic group. In these compounds, there is a minimum one bond between a metal and carbon atom of an organic compound. In this way, one can say that a metal-carbon bond(R-M bond) is a characteristic of such compounds. In these kinds of compounds, interaction of a metal atom(s) and carbon atom(s) of organic group is important. Compounds of the d-block elements (transition elements), actinide group elements, lanthanide group elements, etc. are these kinds of compounds. Metal is electropositive and carbon is electronegative.

Organometallic have played a foremost role in the progress of Science. They are useful as catalysts and intermediates for the preparation of a large number of compounds.

Organometallic compounds of Lithium and Magnesium are known as Grignard reagents which are also organometallics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary focus of this book?

This book provides a comprehensive overview of organometallic chemistry, ranging from basic concepts and terminology to synthetic methods and practical applications in modern science.

What are the central thematic areas covered?

The central themes include fundamental definitions, ligand classification (denticity/hapticity), historical development, preparation techniques, and the diverse applications of organometallic compounds.

What is the main objective of this academic work?

The objective is to serve as a reference source and study guide for the scientific community and students interested in exploring the field of organometallic chemistry.

Which scientific methods are discussed for organometallic synthesis?

The book discusses various synthetic approaches, including oxidative addition of alkyl halides, hydrogen exchange processes, metal-halogen exchange, and decarboxylation methods.

What is covered in the main body of the text?

The main body covers the identification of organometallics, standardized nomenclature systems, a survey of relevant literature, specific laboratory synthesis protocols, and current research usage.

How can one define the key concepts of this work?

The work is defined by the study of metal-carbon bonds, structural coordination, ligand behavior, and the synthesis of complex compounds for industrial and medical use.

What is the significance of the "Hapticity" and "Denticity" concepts?

These concepts are crucial for describing how ligands bind to metal centers; hapticity refers to the number of contiguous atoms involved in binding, while denticity describes the number of donor groups a ligand provides.

Why are organometallics considered important in medical research?
