Die Einführung des Mindestlohns ist eine der größten arbeitsmarkt- und sozialpolitischen Reformen in der Geschichte Deutschlands. Etwa 3,7 Millionen Arbeitskräfte im Niedriglohnsektor profitieren genau von dieser wichtigen politischen Maßnahme. Ungarn hat ihn, Belgien auch, in Frankreich und Luxemburg ist er europaweit mit 9,76 € und 11,27 € mit am höchsten. In England wurde er 1999 eingeführt, während er in den Vereinigten Staaten bereits seit 1938 existiert. Deutschland allerdings hatte viele Jahre keinen.
Dies änderte sich jedoch mit dem am 27. November 2013 unterzeichneten Koalitionsvertrag zwischen CDU, CSU und SPD und der Einführung eines flächendeckenden gesetzlichen Mindestlohns von 8,50 €, der mittlerweile seit 2017 bei 8,84 € liegt.
