Excerpt from the Book

a) Women’s position in Google

Looking at the charts from previous chapter we can see blurred diversity in the workforce in terms of leadership, technical and non- technical direction and generally in overall view. The male workforce constitutes majority (more than half) in every sector of the business. According to two studies about gender inequality (Kang 2014), the problem starting from the school, when the girls do not rise the hands as often as boys in order to respond to math issue, even if they have the same level of accuracy. Moreover, that the women don’t speak up as many ideas as men in business meeting, even though the observers believe that their thoughts are better than the male colleagues.

The vice president of Google, Laszlo Bock conducted a research. He sent to all employees email with vacancy for the job. Immediately, the amount of female applicants and the rate of promotion among the women rose. When he once forgot to send the email with the job offer, the rate of women in the recruitment process decreased sharply. The result of this research indicates that generally women don’t take self-initiative in career development. The problem is caused by female tech role model in society. Female are not encouraged in order to work in technical profession. It caught on that the tech industry belongs only to males, thus women lose interest in this sort of field of development. It is also emphasised that the gender gap is caused by the wrong carried out recruitment process. We have to think if the Google attract the right amount of people and think over, if the firm offers the position to the right candidates.
