Excerpt from the Book
3.1. [Einliniensystem] Unity of command
In this leadership system, every employee has one direct superior. Understandably the personnel have only one high-ranking man. Or as Beschorner and Peemöller (Beschorner & Peemöller 2006, page 101) formulate it: “[O]ne man, one boss”. This is the principle of unity of placing orders by Fayol in year 1916 (Beschorner & Peemöller 2006, page 101).
An advantage for the enterprise is the close-fitting and well-arranged organisation. Another point is that the office channels are clearly and short. Further-more, the superior can control his employees much better because he knows their work and tasks which were given by him (MUBk 2008).
A paradoxical disadvantage is the long way of office channels because the superior is stressed by too many information and decisions that have to be adapted by him (Eduhi). Besides it takes longer to rework all information and decisions so that the production maybe reduces and that is not an advantage for the profit of an enterprise.
The unity of command can be found in that pure form mostly in small or mid-level businesses (Eduhi).
