ABSTRACT

In the recent years there has been advancement in Information Technology and expedient electronic items improvement. With an updation of innovation the hardware items have produced a lot of electronic waste. A electronic waste comprises of numerous hurtful synthetic compounds and metals, due to this reason it is extremely fundamental to deal with such sort of electronic waste with a legitimate deterrent measure and care. Else it will influence brutally to human well being and condition as well. To deal with the e-waste , an appropriate e-waste administration conventions, improvement of eco-friendly gadgets, legitimate collections channels of e-waste, appropriate recuperation and reuse strategies and discard e-waste by reasonable procedure and its mindfulness is especially important to the common public in present situation. This investigation is concentrated to understand the awareness regarding the e-waste existence, its hazards and management among management students, and to measure effect of e-waste training intervention.

An interventional study was conducted during the month of January 2017 among third year management students in Krupanidhi College Bangalore Karnataka. E-waste training intervention session to 56 students was conducted by adopting simple random sampling method. A pre designated questionnaires was administered as pre-test followed by e-waste training. A post-test response was collected a week later. Data was analyzed using ms-excel and SPSS tool. With a P value < 0.05 considered significant, a Chi-square test was applied to understand the effectiveness of the training.

A total of 56 questionnaires were analyzed. Out of the total respondents 56% of the respondents were males and 44% of the respondents were females. There was a gain in the knowledge about e-waste management among the students after e-waste training intervention at p<0.05. Respondent’s source of information about e-waste management was Internet (73.21%) followed by News paper (14.28%) and Television (10.71%).

INTRODUCTION:

New electronic items have turned into an essential element of our everyday lives giving us more solace, security, simple and quicker obtaining and exchange of data. However, then again, it has additionally prompted excessive resource utilization and a massive waste generation. E-waste contains an entire category of electrical and electronic things, for example, fridges, clothes washers, PCs and printers, TVs, mobiles etc. E-waste comprises of all waste from electronic and electrical machines which are their in finish of-life period or are never fit for their planned utilize and are bound for recuperation, reusing or transfer.

Awareness about e-waste management among general public is essential. Use of electronic gadgets increased among management students for various reasons. Being responsible citizen, management students can play a major role in management of e-waste.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

With this background this paper aims to explore the awareness of e-waste among the management students. Therefore, following objective is kept in mind during the study.

1. To assess the awareness of management students regarding e-waste hazards and its management before and after the educational intervention session.

HYPOTHESIS:

H1: The educational training intervention session of ‘e-waste management and its hazards’ have no impact on the management students.

METHODOLOGY AND DATA COLLECTION

Keeping the above objectives in mind an interventional study was conducted in the month of January 2017 among third year management students. A simple random sampling method was adopted to choose 56 students among 90 students.

Questionnaire: A questioner consisting of 8 questions explaining the awareness of e-waste management was self administered and filled during the interaction with the respondents. The data collected includes both demographic information of the respondents and also assessments of awareness of e-waste management.

Description of the tool:

Part I- Personal details of the respondents.

Part II- Sources of information regarding e-waste.

Part III-Awareness of e-waste, management, hazards etc

This was followed by an E-waste training intervention session lasting for 3 days. A power point presentation, video clipping and a relevant case study was discussed to impart the knowledge on e-waste management. A week later post-test was held using same questionnaire for the same set of respondents.

Statistical Analysis: The collected information from the questionnaire is then compiled into tables by using Ms-Excel and SPSS software. A simple descriptive statistical analysis tools including percentages, chi-square test etc has been used in this study.

The responses collected from the 56 respondents, it is compiled to extract the findings of the study.

Findings:

A total of 56 questionnaires were analyzed. Out of the total respondents 73.21% of the respondents were males and 26.78% of the respondents were females from table 1.

1. Respondent’s source of information about e-waste management was Internet (73.21%) followed by News paper (14.28%) and Television (10.71%). This is tabulated in table 2.
2. Desire for latest technology is a main reason to buy new electronic products (51.78%) from table 3.
3. There was a gain in the knowledge about e-waste management among the students after e-waste training intervention at p<0.05 from table 4

Discussion on findings: The study had focused on awareness of e-waste among management students. During the study it was also observed the lack of knowledge of e-waste and its management among the management students and need to address the issue at high priority.

Table 1 consolidates the demographic profile of the respondents. 56 management students were consulted for the study. All of them are between the age group of 20-30 years. Sex ratios of the respondents were 73.21% of the respondents are male and 26.78% are female respondents. Among the respondents 5.35% are married and 94.64% respondents were unmarried.

Table 2 consolidates about the sources of information regarding e-waste. Four sources were listed in the table. Internet is the source of information for 73.21% of the respondents. News paper, television, family and friends are the source of information for 14.28%, 10.71% and 1.78% respectively.

Table 3 will explain the consolidated opinion of the respondents revealing reason for purchasing new gadgets. Around 52% of the respondents will purchase new gadgets for the reason of desire for latest technology and up gradation. Around 27% respondents have expressed their opinion to purchase a new gadget due to physical damage to the products. Around 11% of the respondents have expressed their opinion to purchase new gadgets due to the reason of not proper functioning of the gadgets and other factors.

Table 4 explains about the awareness regarding e-waste in pre and post test. The chi-square test is applied for the responses obtained. From the table 4 it is very clear that, the significance p value is less than 0.05% that is p<0.05 in all the cases. From this we can conclude that the training effectiveness on e-waste awareness among management students is significant. P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Hence hypothesis H1 will be rejected.

FURTHER SCOPE OF RESEARCH

The study was conducted on management students with limited factors of e-waste awareness. The same study can be extended to any set of population with an in depth factors which are affecting e-waste management and its significance.

CONCLUSIONS

Implementations of any e-waste management procedures are very much essential in the present scenario. For this everyone has an equal responsibility to share. Awareness about e-waste management among general public is essential. Use of electronic gadgets increased among young population for various reasons. Being responsible citizens, management students can play a major role in management of e-waste and its hazards in a day to come with a help of available or new technology for the safe environment.
