Excerpt from the Book
2.4 The views on Facebook
The majority of participants have positive views on Facebook. Overall, they think that it is convenient. For example, some of them mentioned that it is a good entertainment and a useful tool. Their opinions can be divided into different categories, namely interpersonal benefits, intra-personal benefits and business benefits.
For inter-personal benefits, they reflected that Facebook is a platform to make new friends through adding those who are strangers or friends’ friends. This helped them to enlarge their social circle. At the same time, the participants agree that Facebook was a nice way to communicate with others and know more about their friends. They think that it made better relationships.
On the other hand, some of the interviewers mentioned that Facebook is a sharing platform. They can share their feelings and photos through a post. They can also record what they do and where they go by Facebook. It seems that for them, Facebook was a tool for recording their daily lives.
In addition, some of the participants thought that Facebook is a promotional tool. It is easy to find different kinds of advertisement on it since many companies promote products on their own pages. Some political parties express their views on different social issues on Facebook. Some people use it as a medium to show off themselves. These promotional activities are not only for business, politics, but also for the personal use.
However, a few people pointed out that it is dangerous to post our personal information on Facebook. We need to be careful to protect our privacy. It is also important to control ourselves not to spend too much time or depend on Facebook, otherwise we would be addicted on it and have a lot of time wasted.
