Sight is a leading theme in Romeo and Juliet and the frequent use of words relating to visual perception is not random or gratuitous. Therefore, the primary object of this thesis is demonstrating that beside the well-debated forces that govern the action there are others that may have been neglected. Precisely because readers may focus too much on the love story or on other outstanding elements of the play, such as the comic passages which stand in stark contrast with the tragic theme of the play, a considerable amount of intriguing aspects might escape our attention. These are subtle details, which serve a great purpose in the plot development. On many occasions vision becomes the cause of a series of events in the play. By this reflection on the faculty of seeing and the organ of visual perception I wish to consider closely these items that can be easily overlooked when dealing with the play. Owing to the fact that Romeo and Juliet is the best-known tragedy of Shakespeare, much has been written about it, mostly concerning the extent of the lovers' and the parents' culpability or destiny's role in contributing to the tragical ending.

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
Introduction: This chapter introduces the thesis's central argument: that visual perception plays a crucial, yet often overlooked, role in driving the plot of Romeo and Juliet. It challenges the prevailing critical focus on the lovers' culpability and fate, suggesting a need for a more nuanced understanding of the play. The introduction cites existing critical interpretations that emphasize plot over theme, and argues against the simplistic view of the play's complexities. It highlights the importance of examining subtle details often missed in analyses that concentrate on the love story or comedic elements. The chapter sets the stage for a detailed exploration of how visual perception influences the course of events and the characters' actions within the play.
Exploring visual perception - theories of sight: This section (if included in the original text and substantial enough for summary) would delve into various theories of sight and visual perception, providing a theoretical framework for analyzing the role of vision in Romeo and Juliet. The summary would explain how these theories inform the subsequent interpretation of the play’s visual imagery. Depending on the content, the summary might include examples of different theoretical perspectives and how they apply to the themes of the play.
A Historical Panorama of the Theme of Sight in Relation to Shakespeare: This chapter would likely provide a historical and literary context for understanding Shakespeare's use of visual perception. The summary would discuss how the theme of sight (and its related concepts like reflection and perception of truth) was treated in earlier works or within the broader Shakespearean canon. It could offer examples from other plays or literary movements to highlight the originality or context of Shakespeare’s approach in Romeo and Juliet. Specific attention might be paid to the themes of "The dangers of reflection" and "Visual perception as a proof for veracity" and their significance within the wider framework of the play.
Sight and its effects in Romeo and Juliet: This chapter would be the core of the thesis, analyzing specific instances in Romeo and Juliet where visual perception plays a direct role in shaping the narrative. The summary would synthesize the arguments and examples presented in sub-chapters 4.1 and 4.2, detailing how sight directly influences the lovers’ relationship, their decisions, and the escalating conflicts that lead to the tragic conclusion. It would showcase how Shakespeare uses visual details to enhance the dramatic effect and to manipulate the audience's understanding of events and characters. The synthesis of the subchapters would create a comprehensive understanding of the importance of sight as a narrative catalyst in the play.
