Die Avantgarde ist eine politische und künstlerische Bewegung des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. Avantgardistische Schriftsteller haben ein progressives Programm. Die Avantgarde ist sehr stark mit Kritik, Widerstand und Politik auf künstlerischer oder aktivistischer Ebene verbunden. Zur avantgardistischen Bewegung zählt man den Futurismus, den Dadaismus und den Surrealismus.
