Wie in diesem Eingangszitat von Jackson zum Ausdruck kommt, scheint es bestimmte Eigenschaften körperlicher, sinnlicher oder kognitiver Erfahrung zu geben, die in ihrer Gänze nicht durch physikalische Informationen beschreibbar sind, d.h. jede noch so vollständige Beschreibung einer solchen Erfahrung lässt immer bestimmte phänomenale Erlebnisqualitäten außen vor. Wenn allerdings der Physikalismus behauptet, eine umfassende Theorie der Wirklichkeit schlechthin zu sein, so müssen seine Erklärungen eben solche Aspekte einschließen können. Diesen Punkt verdeutlicht Jackson in seinem Aufsatz „Epiphenomenal Qualia“ anhand des Gedankenexperiments der Wissenschaftlerin Mary.
