In this essay, the structure, traits and usage of conventional and creative metaphors shall be compared and discussed. Therefore, a preceding overview about the background and function of metaphors as well as the definition and development of conceptual metaphors is necessary. The focus of this essay will be the use and appliance of metaphors in poetry and literature, which will be exemplified in an analysis of the song The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel. In a short conclusion at the end of the essay, all important insights shall be summarised.

Research Objectives and Topics

This academic paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the function, structure, and classification of metaphors, with a specific focus on the distinction between conventional and creative metaphorical expressions. It explores how these figurative devices are processed cognitively and how they are effectively applied within literary works, particularly poetry, to convey deeper meanings and social commentary.

  • Theoretical foundations of Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT)
  • Classification and cognitive processing of conventional versus creative metaphors
  • The role and manifestation of metaphors within literary texts and poetry
  • Linguistic analysis of metaphorical usage in the song "The Sound of Silence"
  • The relationship between metaphorical language and social/cultural perception

Excerpt from the Book

6. Example Analysis “The Sound of Silence”

The song chosen is the ballad The Sound of Silence, released by the popular American duo Simon & Garfunkel in 1964. The song can be described as a calm and harmonic, but also melancholic melody, guitar and piano being the dominant instruments, with sad and serious lyrics that have to be listened to carefully to understand properly what is said between the lines and what the singer intends the audience to have more thoughts about. It describes the power of silence and the many ways that unspoken things and missing communication as well as the isolation and ignorance of people can have an impact on our lives and society.

The song is very suitable for a metaphorical analysis, as a considerable number of metaphors are used by the artists to convey their message to the audience. It starts right ahead with a personification, namely the personification of darkness, which the author addresses as an “old friend“ of his:

“Hello, darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again.”

The use of the personification at this point supports the melancholy of the song, creating the image of a boy or man (which is conveyed by the male sex of the singers and the autobiographical background of the song), who sees the darkness as a confidant, something or someone, who gives him comfort and whom he can confide everything to. In the next lines, he gives reason for his need to talk or share his thoughts, describing a vision he had while he was sleeping or dreaming:

“Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains within the sound of silence.”

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: Outlines the significance of metaphors in everyday language and sets the scope for comparing conventional and creative metaphors, culminating in an analysis of "The Sound of Silence".

2. The Concept of Metaphors: Explains fundamental theories like the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and discusses the interplay between target and source domains in human cognition.

3. Conventional Metaphors: Examines well-established metaphors that are deeply ingrained in everyday thinking and linguistic usage, categorizing them into structural, orientational, and ontological types.

4. Creative Metaphors: Discusses unconventional, novel metaphors that serve to provide new understandings and perspectives, often acting as extensions or elaborations of existing conceptual mappings.

5. The Use and Meaning of (Creative) Metaphors in Literature and Poetry: Analyzes how literary texts utilize complex metaphors to create deeper, symbolic meanings compared to non-literary language.

6. Example Analysis The Sound of Silence: Applies the theoretical framework to the song lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel, identifying specific personifications and symbolic metaphors used to critique society.

7. Conclusion: Summarizes the key insights of the paper, emphasizing the role of metaphors as vital components of both our mental lexicon and literary expression.

8. Bibliography: Lists the academic sources and theoretical works cited throughout the investigation.
