Resumen o Introducción

It is easy to overlook the use of concrete in society. Concrete is very much a large part of the environment and it is virtually everywhere. Besides its first rate static properties, which make concrete the prevalent material for massive construction. Concrete offers a variegated range of dynamic effects which are of immense interest to both researchers and engineers. The behaviour of concrete under circumstances involving high strain rates such as earthquakes and high impact situations is crucial in understanding the dynamic behaviour of concrete which is quite unpredictable.

This project work focuses on exploring the suitability of the Finite Element Method (FEM) as well as the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to study the behaviour of concrete in highly dynamic situations of stress and strain. For this purpose, a rectangular plate with a circular opening with the known static solution is taken as reference. The rectangular plate or the Timoshenko plate is subjected to loading and consequently a qualitative analysis under FEM and DEM is done. Finally, a comparison is made with respect to the efficiency and the working procedure of FEM and DEM .
