Excerpt from the Book

4.3 Stakeholders of the Natursteig Sieg

During the course of interviews the word ‘stakeholders’ was mentioned multiple times. This paragraph aims to identify the importance of major stakeholders in rural tourism and particularly evaluates the situation at the ‘Natursteig Sieg’. Private and public stakeholders should be involved in strategies and planning as coordination and support is necessary. In terms of this analysis, the participating interview partners nearly cover the entire spectrum of stakeholders, but each of them was considered as a single sample out of an entire industry.

At a global, national or local level, the development of rural tourism, suggests the need for synergy of purpose within and between communities, individuals, municipalities and other stakeholders (McAveray and McDonagh, 2011). Mr. M.-S. explains: ‘The whole tourism branch and everyone having commercial interests in the project, regarding the regional advancement or generating higher sales, can be considered as a stakeholder. This can be hotels, restaurants or anything just promoting the region.’

A structured group approach may be the way to develop and promote rural tourism, creating inter-community collaboration will be a complex and difficult process though (Heneghan, 2002). Mr. Oharek from the Oktopus hotel in Siegburg expresses some serious concerns: ‘A lot of hotels are not very quick and flexible. Most of them are old family businesses and are not easy to convince to accept new innovative strategies, as long established structures still exist. Apart from that, the small hotels near the Natursteig are definitely stakeholders, but only with limited marketing resources. This is a fast-moving business and one has to keep track of things.’
