This research assessed the Internet use and its relationship to the academic performance of the grade six learners of an Elementary School in Guizo Mandaue City during school year 2016-2017.
As to respondents profile, most of them are 12 years old of which 92 are female while 85 are male; they started accessing the Internet between the age of five or six and access at Cyber Café using PC/Desktop; their frequency use of Internet was more than three hours with verbal description of very high and their most visited website was the social networking sites.
As perceived by the respondents, the extent use of the Internet for educational intention was occasionally while social was often and recreational was frequently. Their academic performance was 80.39 which belonged to a Satisfactory Academic Performance. This research found out that there is a negative correlation between learners’ Internet use and academic performance. It concluded that there is a negative correlation between learners’ Internet use and academic performance. This means that the more the learners use the Internet for education or social intentions the poorer is their academic performance. The most serious issue/concern encountered by the respondents when accessing the Internet was slow Internet access speed. After a review of the analysis and interpretations of data and findings, it is strongly recommended that the proposal for Improvement Plan for Internet use be adopted.

Objectives and Key Themes
This research aimed to assess the relationship between internet use and the academic performance of sixth-grade students in an elementary school in Guizo, Mandaue City during the 2016-2017 school year. The study explored how different types of internet use (educational, social, recreational) correlated with academic achievement.
- The impact of internet use on the academic performance of sixth-grade students.
- The correlation between different types of internet use (educational, social, recreational) and academic performance.
- The identification of challenges faced by students when accessing and using the internet.
- The implications of internet access and usage for educational policy and practice.
- The application of relevant communication theories (Uses and Gratification, Information Processing, Observational Learning) to understand the relationship between internet use and academic performance.
Chapter Summaries
1. Introduction: This chapter introduces the multifaceted nature of the internet and its potential benefits for education. It highlights the growing disparity in internet access and utilization between public and private schools, particularly at the primary and secondary levels. The chapter underscores the pervasive influence of the internet on the lives of school-aged children, impacting various aspects from leisure activities to family relations and socialization. It specifically addresses the underutilization of available educational resources and the need to assess the relationship between internet use and academic performance among sixth-grade students, leading to the research's objective of proposing an action plan to bridge the identified gap.
2. Review of Related Literature and Studies: This chapter reviews existing literature and studies on the effects of internet use on academic achievement and behavioral adjustment. It categorizes internet use into three main intentions: recreational (gaming, entertainment), educational (school projects, homework), and communicative (chatting, social networking). The chapter lays the groundwork for the research by defining the dimensions of internet use that will be examined, including time spent online and the extent of use according to the identified intentions.
