How does a leader see himself or herself? What does he or she perceive about his or her leadership and leadership abilities? The first part of this work briefly discusses different aspects of leaders’ cognisance on leadership in general and their own leadership abilities. Afterwards the author considers three motivations that most directly influence a leader’s behaviour, discussing the goals behind them, the resulting behaviour and its influence on the leadership style. The final part of this work starts with brief explanations of Emotional Intelligence in leadership and some of the more common models of the leadership process. From these, a model of Integrated Emotional Intelligence (IEI) in the leadership process is developed. Considering the elements of this model, the effects of Emotional Intelligence on leader behaviour and leader communication are explained.

The cognisance of leaders on leadership is much influenced by their perception on their own leadership abilities and their motivations. These, however, may turn out to be quite complex and lacking the consideration of the followers’ abilities and motivations. Emotional Intelligence in leadership is one concept to enhance leaders’ cognisance in this respect.

Excerpt from the Book

Integrated Emotional Intelligence Model

The model starts with the situation, context and environment in which the leadership process, which could also be a change process as a core task of leadership (Kotter, 2008), is executed. The situation can be influence variously from the outside. In this overall environment, the target for the leadership (or change) process is set.

In the centre of the model is the leadership process, ranging from the target via the need for leadership (which could also be the need for chance), the plan of enactment, the actual enactment of leadership (or change), the success control, and a phase of recuperation to the results. It is accompanied by the leaders’ and the followers. It leads, ultimately, to the results of the process from which, typically, the process could start anew.

The leaders influence the core process through elements of Emotional Leadership such as self-awareness, self-control, adaptability, achievement orientation, positive outlook, empathy, and organisational awareness. These elements are applied on various stages throughout the process without one element being specifically linked to one stage of the leadership process. The leaders themselves are influenced by their traits and other external influences such as their experiences, their backgrounds and learnings in practice and academically, their view on ethics, and other learnings they adopt.

The followers principally receive the same external influences as the leaders. They are, however, also influences by the leadership process through coaching and mentoring, conflict resolutions if necessary, guidance for teamwork, and an inspirational leadership, all of which are elements from Emotional Intelligence.

Together, leaders and followers, triggered and influenced by the context and their traits, can complete the leadership process, in which Emotional Intelligence is included.
