Research Objectives and Themes

This book investigates the intricate relationship between parenting styles, parental perfectionism, and career indecision among undergraduate students. The core objective is to analyze how these familial factors influence career development and whether gender acts as a moderating variable in these associations, ultimately aiming to provide a deeper understanding for counselors and educators to develop more effective intervention strategies.

  • The impact of diverse parenting styles on career decision-making processes.
  • The specific influence of adaptive versus maladaptive parental perfectionism.
  • The role of gender as a potential moderator in the career development path.
  • Practical clinical and educational implications for reducing career indecision among young adults.

Excerpt from the Book

2.5.3 Consequences of Parental Perfectionism

Each child faces a variety of experience from his or her own beliefs about the receptiveness and reliability of others through communications with main caregivers (Fraley et al., 2013). Parenting perfectionism shows to what extent an individual holds excessively high standards for themselves particular to the parenting role (Snell Jr et al., 2005). The possible results concerning parenting perfectionism on parenting self-efficacy, parenting stress and pride in the parenting role may have extensive consequences for the development of parent-child relationships at an important stage of family development.

Compared with European Americans, Asian Americans reported having more doubts about their actions and being more concerned about their mistakes (Castro & Rice, 2003; Chang, 1998) Chang & Chang, 2009; Kawamura et al., 2002) which are both associated with maladaptive perfectionism. In addition, Asian Americans have also reported higher levels of parental expectations and parental criticism (Castro & Rice, 2003). Chang and Chang (2009) suggested that Asian Americans’ higher negative perfectionism is possibly related to having greater demands from others to achieve and therefore more negative experiences around social expectations.

Yoon and Lau (2008) also found that interdependence moderated the relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and depression; specifically, there was a stronger positive relationship between maladaptive perfectionism and depression among Asian American students with higher interdependence. In addition to the differences on perfectionism scores, traditional Asian cultural is more collectivistic in nature and value family reputation and conforming to familial expectations more than Western cultures (Triandis, 1995).
