Introduction of a Platform Trolley (Best design):

The Platform Trolley is equipment used to move heavy loads from one place to another. It helps reduce the human burden in their daily lives and activities. This device is commonly used by a large number of industries to transport physical products. Trolley is often used by those who organize and stock merchandise in retail stores restock. When used properly, trolley can protect people from having back injuries and other health problems that can result from lifting and carrying heavy loads. This platform trolley is intended for transporting of goods with a maximum nominal load of 250-300kg. During loading and unloading the load is evenly distributed on the platform. The platform trolley is moved slowly and smoothly, in order to provide stability. And it is secured with the brakes on the swivel wheels in order to avoid unintended rolling away when it is parked.

Description of the best design:

The Platform trolley or hand truck is a device that moves loads from one location to another location. From the best design, parts of a Platform trolley are identified by their purpose and location. The best design includes the platform board, this is where the goods that are to be carried are being placed on, described as the load carriage, that carries the load. Attached to the top of the platform is the handle; the handle also helps support and prevent the load from shifting backwards. And attached beneath the platform are the Rigid and swivel wheels. The both tires help with the movement and the direction of the trolley and to keep the trolley stable while it’s in use.(AHMAD, 2008)

Process involved in developing the best concept:

- Market Survey:

Market survey plays a great roll in meeting customers’ requirements and needs. In order to improve on certain parts of our product, the decision was not just made based on brainstorming, rather we considered a basic view of our customers’ needs that was highlighted to meet with safety factor and increase the efficiency of the product.

- House of quality (QFD):

This quality function deployments was used to analyze the specification on both the customers and the engineering specifications to strike a balance.

- Evaluation Method:

The Scoring Evaluation matrix is used to decide on the best design after accurate calculations was done.

Objective of the analysis of a “Platform Trolley” or “Hand Truck”:

The objectives of this report are to analyze the failure associated with it under working conditions. The redesigning of certain parts is centered on meeting customers’ requirements on safety purpose and the ability to withstand additional loads throughout its life service. However, the captured components that will be modified include the carriage (platform), Wheels, and the change in material on the platform. The purpose is to;

- To reduce the rate of platform failure while using the trolley
- To increase the maximum load capacity
- Improve overall quality of the product

Methodology (Objectives):

Methodology is a set of practices. This term may be used to refer to practices which are widely used across an industry to conduct an investigation or discipline. Understanding how ideal it serves as a basis to carry out problem or analyze concepts, the following objectives were met. The concentration here Centre’s on the following part components;

- The dimension of the platform was increased
- Width and work-surface area
- The platform material was changed from carbon steel to alloy steel.

Methodology (Analysis):

The analysis was carried out specifically on the Platform (carriage). The reasons is to best ascertained the failure criteria and seek for possible way to eliminate it there by increasing its safety factor. A static analysis will be carried out to study the behavior of the part where loads is being applied on. The principles that will govern these analyses include;

- Analysis is based on the principle of moment.
- Simply supported beam, using uniformly distributed load.
- Solving for bending stress and deflection.

Engineering specifications means those records which provide detailed documentation of the construction, arrangement and related engineering details of the information processing equipment of any product.

Innovative features of the product:

Innovative packaging designs and features make your product stand out and sell more. And these products become successful when they satisfy customer needs in particularly innovative ways. While numerous factors influence the success of a product, a product’s level of innovation is affected most directly at the product design stage, we have taken innovation to heart by emphasizing it in some areas such as the functions, the process, design, and the changing of materials to draw our customers attentions in choosing the right packaging products amongst varieties of Platform Trolley in the competitive market.

Designers are currently told to innovate, but few tools are provided to help a designer maximize the likelihood of product success. Adding an additional function, reduce product size, make the product easier to use, and changing of materials where necessary. Following these new features as a designer, we implemented some ideas to enhance the performance of a platform trolley.

Implementation of new features into our product (Platform Trolley):

Functions:

The Platform Trolley was design to meet some working conditions such as transportation of equipment, goods and luggage’s, from one workplace to another. Enabling stockroom and warehouse workers to transport heavier and larger loads in less time, a platform trolley features a long loading deck able to handle bulk materials with ease. In addition to the standard steel construction, the platform trucks with decks made of maintenance-free resin and metal composite material that is easy to clean and resistant to chemical and weather damage. Built with functionality in mind, a platform truck helps you get the job done right.(Grainger, 2013)

Design:

The implementation of new designs was carried out on the platform, and on the wheels of the trolley, and another detachable or protective handle was added to help protect the goods or equipment’s from falling off while it’s being transported. The platform was designed in such a way that it can handle a certain amount of load that is being placed on it. And when its being transported the wheels can move in a 3600 direction, to enable easy stirring of the trolley. And also the swivel wheels was designed to have manual break system to prevent it from rolling off when loading of goods is going on.

Platform There were slight changes made in the platform, increase in the thickness and changes were made to the material used. However, the changes were made to affect the analysis positively. The platform was simplified to make room for protective handles. Load bearing capacity has been calculated to be compatible with fixed platforms with maximum load of 300kg which exceeds the existing product that can withstands a maximum load of 150kg.

Tires The wheel tires were changed from PVC rubber to heavy duty steel pneumatic tires. This heavy duty steel hub pneumatic tire is perfect for keeping dollies, wagons or carts rolling smoothly. The tire has a high quality rubber casing designed for long life. This ideal replacement pneumatic tire is great for wagons and other lawn/garden applications.

- Heavy duty steel hub with enamel finish.
- Quality rubber casing with inner tube.
- Knobby pattern tread.
- Ball bearings.
- Detachable handle.

The moveable handle helps you to carry bulky loads and awkward items. And it helps support the loads while it’s being transported.

Materials:

The material used in the existing product was aluminum steel. The material was changed from aluminum steel to alloy steel, for its durability and strength under pressure. The alloy steel material increases its weightage capacity, thus making it to withstand a load maximum of 300kg.
