The study was guided by the following specific objectives: To establish the extent of informal settlement in Majengo Slums, Narok County, to find out the causes of informal settlement, to assess the effects of informal settlement on the environment in the Slums and to determine the policy measures to reduce informal settlements. The study will be of great value to the government in the formulation of policies and strategies for controlling informal settlement and in addition researchers and scholars will use the study to provide the basis of future studies.
To provide the basis of the study findings, the researcher relied on the following theories: Malthusian Theory of Population Growth, The Optimum Theory and Theory of Demographic Transition. Data was collected using questionnaires and guides from 96 household heads obtained through cluster sampling in Majengo Slum and 5 key informants purposively selected. It was then analyzed using Microsoft Excel Package presented in tables percentages.
People residing in informal settlements face challenges of service delivery. This is mainly due to the fact that land was occupied illegally, thus impacting negatively on the environment. It was in the background of the above problem, that this study sought to establish the influence of informal settlement on the surrounding environment.

Chapter Summaries
Chapter One: Introduction of the Study: This introductory chapter sets the stage for the research by outlining the problem of informal settlements and their environmental impact in Majengo Slums, Narok County. It clearly states the research objectives, both general and specific, highlighting the goal of understanding the relationship between informal settlements and environmental degradation. The chapter also details the significance of the study, its limitations, and its scope, providing a framework for the research that follows. It lays the groundwork for the subsequent literature review and methodology chapters, providing context and direction for the entire study. The problem statement emphasizes the negative environmental consequences stemming from the illegal occupation of land in informal settlements, which often leads to inadequate service delivery and environmental damage.
Chapter Two: Literature Review: This chapter provides a comprehensive review of existing literature related to informal settlements and their environmental consequences. It explores empirical studies on the causes of informal settlements and their impact on the environment, synthesizing findings from various sources. The chapter also delves into relevant theoretical frameworks, including the Malthusian Theory of Population Growth, the Optimum Theory, and the Theory of Demographic Transition, examining how these theories relate to the phenomenon of informal settlements. Finally, it identifies research gaps and presents a conceptual framework that guides the current study, showing how it builds upon and contributes to existing knowledge in the field. The inclusion of theoretical perspectives allows for a multi-faceted analysis of the complex issue of informal settlements.
