The study examined study habits and academic performance of senior secondary school students in Mathematics. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between study habits and academic performance of senior secondary school students in Mathematics.
To carry out this study, four research questions and one null hypothesis were raised to guide the study. The population of 1128 Senior Secondary School Two (SS2) students with a sample size of 200 respondents was selected from 5 public secondary schools for the study using simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data for the study, which consists of two sections (A and B), section A consist of 20 items while section B, consist of 30 achievement tests on mathematics. The reliability coefficient of 0.72 was obtained using Split Half Method. Data collected was analyzed using simple frequency counts, percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient (PPMC) and the hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance using One-Way Analysis of Variance(ANOVA).
However, the results revealed that there is significant relationship between study habits and academic performance of senior secondary school students in mathematics. Based on the result of the findings, it was recommended that group guidance should be organized in schools by professional counsellors in order to create awareness on how students can develop effective study habits which could lead to good academic performance in mathematics and a functional school library should be mounted in all the secondary schools.

- Factors influencing academic performance beyond study habits.
- The role of student attitudes in learning and academic success in mathematics.
- Potential interventions to improve study habits and enhance academic performance.
Chapter Summaries
CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION: This chapter sets the stage for the research project. It provides background information on the importance of studying mathematics and the potential impact of study habits on academic success. The chapter clearly states the problem the research addresses – the need to understand the relationship between study habits and academic performance in mathematics among senior secondary students. The research questions and hypotheses are also laid out, along with the significance of the study and its scope. Operational definitions of key terms ensure a clear understanding of the terminology used throughout the research.
CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW: This chapter presents a comprehensive review of existing literature related to study habits and academic performance, specifically focusing on mathematics. It explores various concepts such as the definition of "habit," academic performance, and the influence of note-taking, time management, class attendance, and student attitudes on academic outcomes. The chapter also examines other factors affecting academic performance in mathematics and analyzes how gender might play a role in study habits and achievement. This review lays a strong foundation for the research by contextualizing the current study within existing knowledge and identifying gaps in research that this project aims to address.
CHAPTER THREE: RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: This chapter details the research design and methodology employed in the study. It describes the research design (likely a quantitative approach given the mention of statistical analysis), the area of the study, and the population and sample selection methods. The chapter also explains the instruments used for data collection, such as questionnaires and achievement tests, and addresses the validity and reliability of these instruments, a crucial aspect of ensuring the trustworthiness and rigor of the research findings. The procedures for data analysis are also described, laying out the statistical methods used to interpret the results.
