The paper deals with the topic of of spirituality in Edgar Allan Poe's poem “The Raven”.

A poem such as “The Raven”, especially due to its great resonance, would be a shame to be limited and diminished to apply just to the life of the writer. A poem is a piece that once created is free to alternate through time and maintain its vitality. Unconsciously though everyone is affected by experience and it is inevitable not to be influenced by it. It is possible that death affected Poe in a higher degree than others but on the other hand death and life after it has always been an alluring subject since it is indeed the most mysterious event of life so far. The supernatural element implies an unknown world, one all people fear and also hope for and it is what makes the poem so enthralling to the audience and what made “The Raven” one of the most popular poems ever.

Excerpt from the Book

THE TREATMENT OF DEATH AND SPIRITUALITY IN THE RAVEN

From very early in the poem the reader is submerged into an ominous, dark setting. It is midnight and it is December, both pointing to darkness and isolation. In this setting low but distinct sounds wake up those feelings of fear, mostly of the unknown, something lurking in the shadows.

Death is introduced early in the poem along with a hint of the supernatural world, “And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor” (8). Right after this line the death of Lenore appears as the main influence in the speaker’s frame of mind and his struggle to be relieved by the pain of her loss. “Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow /I from my books to surcease of sorrow –sorrow for my lost Lenore-” (9, 10) and then again the spiritual element appearing this time in the form of angels surrounding now Lenore.

The juxtaposition of this world with the spiritual one and the move of a person from this world to another which are mutually exclusive and definite appeals to the feelings of loss to anyone who has lost a loved one. Death appears as the pitiless conviction that waits all people, some sooner than others.

The fear of this fate that is instilled into human nature is becoming more and more evident as the speaker is trying to calm himself and reason his terror for all the noises with the repetition of assuring statements “Only this and nothing more”(6), and also in lines 18, 24, 30 and 36. He appears to be feeling that something that terrorizes him has escaped the spiritual world and came to him. Even if the sounds are likely to be coming from his beloved Lenore, the thought that she might be back from the dead is one that fills him with terror even though his heart yearns to see her again.
