Biography
John Paul Tansley Courchene is an Indigenous roofing professional, certified installer, crew leader and foreman with nineteen years of experience across Winnipeg’s residential and commercial roofing sectors. His expertise includes fibreglass shingles, flat-roof installation and repair, composite roofing, materials estimation, quality control, jobsite safety and crew supervision.
John holds four industry credentials: CertainTeed ShingleMaster, GAF Certified Roofer, Enviroshake Factory-Trained Installer and Certified Shingle Quality Specialist. He has also served as a designated Crew Safety Representative, helping maintain safety procedures and compliance on the jobsite.
His years with Lansard Brothers Roofing became an important part of his professional and personal journey. At the time of this book’s publication, John is continuing his career as a foreman with Pristine Roofing, where he remains committed to leadership, mentorship and quality workmanship.
John’s life extends far beyond his credentials. His journey took him from addiction, incarceration and life on the streets to becoming a skilled tradesman trusted with crews, equipment and completed jobs. Through this book, he honours the roofers who work through difficult weather, protect families who may never know their names and carry the physical cost of the trade.
John hopes his story will encourage young people, especially those who believe their past has already determined their future. His life and work demonstrate that rebuilding is possible through accountability, discipline, mentorship and the courage to keep climbing.
