Objectives and Research Themes

This paper examines the evolving definition of luxury within architecture, exploring how it has transitioned from being perceived as a manifestation of excessive cost to a positive, essential element of contemporary design. The research investigates how architectural theories and site-specific factors influence societal well-being and the creation of meaningful spaces.

  • Analysis of four foundational architectural theories and their application to luxury.
  • Examination of contemporary challenges in architecture, including heritage preservation and inclusivity.
  • Investigation of the psychological and physiological impact of architectural sites on occupants.
  • Exploration of how luxury architecture has shifted from an elite privilege to a ubiquitous societal feature.

Excerpt from the Book

The Phenomenon of Place by Christian Norberg Schulz

The theory of phenomenon of place, as developed by Schulz, emphasized converting the environment into meaning by the invention of new places. According to Andersen (2018), Schulz’s theory insisted on both the spirit of the place as well as its sensuous qualities, which may include symbolism, colors, lighting and materials. In essence, it provides that basic architectural component such as the ceiling, floor or wall are important and experienced as frame for nature, boundary and horizon. However, Lindstrom and Malpas (2020) considers the Phenomenon of Place a descriptive theory since it attempts to distinguish between space and place, and also prescriptive because it identifies the light on the phenomenology. This phenomenology became a very influential school of thought for modern architects like Peter Waldman, Tadao Ando, leading to a revived interest in the sensuous qualities of color, light and materials, as well as in the tactile, symbolic importance of the joint.

Summary of Chapters

1. Introduction: Outlines the historical context of architecture as a reflection of society and establishes the paper's goal of exploring luxury through four key theories.

2. The Phenomenon of Place by Christian Norberg Schulz: Discusses the importance of sensuous qualities and the relationship between physical components and the "spirit of place."

4. Functionalism: Analyzes the philosophy of "form follows function" and its impact on architectural design versus purely aesthetic considerations.

5. Theory of Signs: Explores semiotics in architecture, emphasizing that buildings carry meaning and create links in the beholder's mind.

6. Key issues for architecture today: Highlights contemporary challenges such as urbanisation, material limitations, and the necessity of inclusive design.

7. The effect(s) of the architectural site: Investigates the profound impacts that well-designed, luxurious sites have on the productivity, health, and mood of occupants.
