Abstract or Introduction

At the end of long and often complicated negotiations Turkey and the European Union succeeded in concluding a customs union in March 1995. This treaty came into force on December 31st, 1995. The EU-Turkey Customs Union is widely seen as an essential step towards full membership of the European Union itself. Today, goods can travel between the two entities without any customs restrictions. However, the customs union does not cover essential economic areas, for instance agriculture, services and public procurement. The main provisions of the Union also include the application of the Union’s tariffication structure on the exchange of industrial goods and services of Turkey vis-à-vis third countries.
