Excerpt from the Book

2.1 The Origin and Evolution of Emotional Intelligence

Although people have long recognized the importance of emotions in human behavior, emotional intelligence as a scientific concept developed relatively recently. Early psychologists mainly focused on cognitive intelligence, believing that reasoning ability was the primary determinant of success. However, researchers gradually realized that individuals with high IQs did not always perform better in leadership or interpersonal situations. Social relationships, emotional awareness, and communication skills often explained why some people succeeded while others struggled despite having similar intellectual abilities.

The modern concept of emotional intelligence was formally introduced by psychologists Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer in 1990. They defined emotional intelligence as the ability to monitor one's own emotions and the emotions of others, distinguish between different feelings, and use emotional information to guide thinking and actions (Salovey & Mayer, 1990). Their work laid the theoretical foundation for subsequent research in psychology and organizational behavior.

The concept gained worldwide popularity after Daniel Goleman published his best-selling book Emotional Intelligence in 1995. Goleman argued that emotional intelligence could be more important than IQ in predicting personal and professional success. According to him, outstanding leaders are distinguished not only by intelligence and technical expertise but also by their ability to understand emotions, motivate people, build relationships, and manage themselves effectively (Goleman, 1995).

Later, Goleman and his colleagues expanded the application of emotional intelligence to leadership by demonstrating that emotionally intelligent leaders consistently create more engaged employees, stronger organizational cultures, and higher-performing teams. Their research shifted organizational thinking from viewing leadership as purely strategic to recognizing it as fundamentally relational (Goleman et al., 2017).
