Excerpt from the Book

SECTION 6: STRATEGIC ANALYSIS

Once Beatrice & Franklin Associates LLC, has acquired an existing payroll processor and merged its operations into its own, there should be significant cost reductions that can be made by virtue of eliminating redundant operations, including staff, facilities, equipment, marketing efforts, and sales efforts (Knilans, 2009). By offering both financial and payroll services under one gable, as it were, the newly combined company should enjoy increased sales by enticing new clients and expanding relationships with existing consumers (Thompson Jr., Strickland III, & Gamble, 2008). As Beatrice & Franklin Associates LLC, sales increase, it should further benefit from an economy of scale since each additional client account should cost incrementally less to service than the one before it (Reeves & Deimler, 2011).

In our analysis of this strategy, particularly our acquisition of an outside payroll processor, however, we have to ask whether this merger has good potential for success. The answer is yes, because of the complementary nature of the two companies. Unlike mergers between competitors, such as HP and Compaq or Kmart and Sears, this acquisition would not result in pilfered sales from one brand to the other (Reeves & Deimler, 2011).

Since Beatrice & Franklin Associates LLC, and the acquired company currently provide two different services. At the same time, this will not be like mergers between companies with different business models, such as AOL and Time Warner, where the combination creates a logistical nightmare in trying to integrate complete disparate operations (Thompson Jr., Strickland III, & Gamble, 2008). Unlike AOL and Time Warner, Beatrice & Franklin Associates LLC, will benefit from cost cuts resulting from overlapping back-end services, while also stimulating sales with very complementary services aimed at the same target market: business clients (Kotler, Keller, & Lane, 2006).
