Resumen Extracto de texto Detalles

"The Joy Luck Club" by Amy Tan portrays four Chinese women who migrated from China to the United States, still filled with the pain of the past and traditional Chinese culture. The interlocked stories in the book follow the development of the influence of the women's experience on their respective daughters, who are born in the United States.

Due to some traumatic experiences, the mothers could not and cannot freely and independently live their lives, so in the United States, where equality between male and female can be found, they put all their hopes on their daughters, hoping that they can be crafted into bright persons in the future under their mothers’ nursing. The daughters are thus to shine and thrive in the booming country, rather unlike the ancient Chinese women, who must be subservient to men.

Excerpt from the Book

Strive for Excellence and Arrested Development

The disfigurement of human-beings is the nature of human and imperfection; it inspires us towards perfection, a precious treasure. If people achieve their perfection, they will probably be relaxed, unless they give themselves another chance to find another transformation as the goal of perfection, when they are no longer growing.

In “The Joy Luck Club”, the mothers sense their deformities, and forbid their daughters to follow their footsteps, but to be shaped as a perfect essence. They are dedicated to foster the abilities of their daughters earlier. Daughters are the logs on mothers’ hands, mothers pour all the vitality to carve them and repair their deformities, so the "imperfect" can be reborn as a "perfect". This is a kind of self-fulfilling, self-transcendence, sublimation of mothers and significance of their lives is brought up.

Mothers have high expectations on daughters – developing their perfect character, not only being self-critical, but also goading their daughters not to slack. Suyuan asks June to continuously “practise the piano”, so as to be a “musical prodigy”. However, this compelling behaviour makes June against from “practising the piano”, in June’s heart, “why don’t you like me the way I am? I’m not a musical prodigy!” However, Suyuan still coerces her sitting in front of the “piano”, June protests for not wanting
