The present study was emphasized on how the action of Mob justice is perpetrated in the suburbs of Addis Ababa City. This Action has been the reality in different parts of Ethiopia especially for the last two years as a manifestation of the political, economic and social turmoil in the existing regime. The research has been followed a case study to get in-depth information from few eyewitnesses that were comprised of different places to collect ample evidence based on the eyewitness account. A qualitative method was used to analyze the data taken from informants with an interview. The findings of the study showed that the nature of mob justice in the suburbs of Addis Ababa city is marked by perpetrators from different socio-demographic backgrounds which especially are young, unemployed and male-dominated mobs. Moreover, there were also strangers that commit most of the action intentionally against a few ethnic groups that project different resentments related to the current political-economic situation in the country. Most of the patterns of mob justice in these localities were supported by government officials at the community level due to different reasons like as a means to hide from future accusations that are believed by these officials. At an individual level, most of the perpetrators were reported to be filled with ethnic haters and economic benefits that are perceived to be gained after the displacement and evacuations by victims from their households and most of the squatter settlements that were targets of the mob justice. At a community level, the ignorance and negligence of the communities in each locality cost hundreds of innocent lives and destructions of huge amounts of properties from these areas. All such actions were caused by different implications that divided households, neighbors, and communities into disintegrations and uncertainties. Finally, educating communities, taking measures to criminals, rehabilitating the victims with different strategies, controlling the hate speeches and fake news by Social Medias with appropriate legal frames, organizing the justice system with impartiality and independence, and change the compositions of local administrative with different ethnic groups and etc were the major recommendations suggested based on the findings reached.

Excerpt from the Book

4.3 The Nature of Mob Justice

The nature of the action of mob justice in the study area was deep rooted and facilitated by different internal and external factors. One of the study participants who lives in Gefersa described the section situation as follows.

In our locality there are different segments of the population that are not permanently living in the area but came out of other parts of the country especially from Wollega and Ambo districts. These peoples are young in their age group and mostly unemployed. Which I believe is the core of the problem. Because they live as many as in small tenant houses and mostly they passed their day idle exposing with different substance abuses and politically intoxicated information.

On the other hand, according to a study participant in Burayu, the nature of mob justice has been attached with the undemocratic landscape of the current regime and there were misunderstanding in order to condemning the supremacy of one ethnic group against the others which finally led the brutal incidents of mob justice in this specific area. He explained the issue as follows:

The action of mob justice in our localities was not the result of sudden incidents. It was resulted after years of political marginalization and Economic wars that were pointed towards one ethnic group in the area. For instance, The Oromo’s were heavily brutalized and being subject to the threat by the regime and that was turned in to confusions and retaliations with the current revolutionary activities in the country’s politics. When I came to the specific case scenario, the major factor that contributed to the action of mob justice in “Burayu” town was because there were biased categorizations against some ethnic groups by even the local community. Because of that, the victims were mostly from one Ethnic groups which were the “Gamos”.That was based on the false information disseminated by the different peoples expressed in relation to Oromo nationalists and local peoples who were intentionally aimed to get economic benefits related to land and different resources which are basically occupied by squatter settlers in suburbs.
