This essay aims to discuss and explore the subject of health, and the various possible explanations for the so-called "widening gap" in health inequalities, which has become increasingly evident over the last two decades.

Much of my reading of this subject indicates that in recent years the government in the United Kingdom have expressed increasing concern with regard to the health inequalities problem; and therefore, a larger focus has been placed on researching and resolving the problem of the "widening gap" in health inequalities.

However, it is also interesting to note that despite all of the publicity, which the political health inequalities debate has received, the efforts of the government in the United Kingdom have had little success in narrowing the gap in health inequalities. Therefore, it comes as no surprise to find that many sources state that the gap in health inequalities continues to grow.

Objectives & Topics

This paper aims to explore the multifaceted causes behind the persistent and widening gap in health inequalities observed in the United Kingdom over the last twenty years, examining how socio-economic factors, government policy, and individual lifestyle choices contribute to these disparities.

  • The impact of socio-economic status as a fundamental determinant of health.
  • The historical context and influence of major government reports such as the Black and Acheson Reports.
  • The role of lifestyle choices and environmental factors in health outcomes.
  • Barriers to accessing health promotion and preventive services among lower socio-economic groups.

Excerpt from the Book

The explanations for the ‘widening gap’ in health inequalities over the last two decades.

The following assignment aims to discuss and explore the subject of health, and the various possible explanations for the so-called ‘widening gap’ in health inequalities, which has become increasingly evident over the last two decades. The term ‘health’ has numerous and varying definitions; however one widely accepted definition, which comes from the World Health Organisation (2005) states that:

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

In this definition the emphasis is placed on the entirety of the individual, and appears to encourage a holistic approach to the provision of healthcare, as opposed to a more medical-based reductionist approach. Lewisham Primary Care NHS Trust (2004) define the term ‘health inequality’ as:

“(…) The difference in health experiences and health outcomes between different population groups. They can be defined by socio-economic status, geographical area, age, disability, gender or ethnic group.”
