Excerpt from the book
2.1. Big Data Analytics
There is no consensus about the definition of the term “big data”4. Often used synonyms are “business intelligence” and “data mining”5. Siemens and Long (2011) define big data as “datasets whose size is beyond the ability of typical database software tools to capture, store, manage and analyze”6. The most common explanation of big data is based on three dimensions: (i) Volume, (ii) Velocity and (iii) Variety7.
i. Volume refers to the large amount of data. Usually, big data is understood as datasets exceeding one terabyte of size.
ii. Velocity describes the speed in which data is generated and transferred.
iii. Variety refers to the large diversity of data types and sources.
Based on this three-dimensional approach, Beyer and Laney (2012) describe big data in their often-cited definition as “high volume, velocity and variety information assets that demand cost-effective, innovative forms of information processing for enhanced insight and decision making”8. In research papers sometimes three more dimensions are mentioned. These are: (iv) Veracity, (v) Variability and (vi) Value9.
