5 ways to prepare for your career while still studying

Transitioning from school to university is a major step in personal development, but starting your career after completing a degree can be just as challenging. Here are five ways to prepare for your professional life while you're still studying.

What to expect:

First things first:

  • Start thinking early about your career path.
  • Use the study time to get to know different professions through internships or working student positions
  • Find out about possible careers for your degree programme

Working student job

One of the most common ways to gain important professional experience during your studies is to work alongside your studies. Working student jobs are designed to be well compatible with your studies: you can work up to 20 hours per week during the semester, and up to 40 hours per week during breaks if you want a sense of full-time work. Working student jobs are also offered in many different areas, so you can explore different roles over an extended period of time.

Research assistant positions

Similar to student jobs, research assistant roles generally involve working 15-20 hours per week. Unlike student jobs, however, these positions are typically offered by various university departments, such as the library or specific academic faculties. They are especially suitable for students considering a career in academia.

Internships

Internships during semester breaks are an excellent way to try out different fields and gain a range of experiences. Since internships are often one to three months long, you’ll have plenty of chances to test out different roles and see which ones might suit you over the long term.

Career services from the Employment Agency

If you’re unsure about potential career paths related to your degree, Germany’s Federal Employment Agency provides helpful resources. They offer online guides and in-person counseling sessions. You may even discover job options you hadn’t considered before. Many countries offer such services, so find out if there is a a similar place near you.

University or college career services

Many universities also have dedicated career counseling offices. If you prefer not to go directly to the Employment Agency, these on-campus resources are a great first step in exploring different career possibilities and gaining insights into future job prospects.

The key to career preparation is this: Gain as many varied experiences as possible and keep an open mind about new or unusual fields. The GRIN team wishes you great success as you prepare for your career!
