5 Series Recommendations for History Students

The history of mankind provides plenty of material not only for research and speculation but also for movies and series. Here are 5 series that every history student should watch.

Studying history often involves countless dates, facts, and major events. If movies feel too lengthy, why not try a series where individual episodes can be more easily fitted into your schedule? Keep in mind, however, that real events are often supplemented or intertwined with fictional characters and narratives.

Les grands mythes (2015)

This series, currently consisting of three seasons, delves into the great myths of Greek and Roman antiquity. The first season covers smaller tales of heroes and gods, such as the story of Daedalus and Icarus, while the second and third seasons focus on Homer’s epic masterpieces: the Iliad and the Odyssey. If you want to brush up on your knowledge of Greco-Roman mythology, this series is a perfect choice! You can stream it on Amazon Prime Video.

Bridgerton (2020)

With two seasons available on Netflix and a third expected later this year, Bridgerton is set in 19th-century London and explores the marriage market during the high society’s ball season. This series is particularly appealing to romantics.

Chernobyl (2019)

This five-episode miniseries examines the aftermath of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster on April 26, 1986. It addresses not only the historical event but also political and environmental debates, raising the question of how nuclear power should be managed in the future. The series is available on Amazon Prime Video and Google Movies & TV.

Rise of Empires: Ottoman (2020)

When thinking of empires, most people probably first recall the Roman Empire, ancient China, or Alexander the Great’s conquests. However, the history of the Ottoman Empire, now modern Turkey, is just as fascinating. This series focuses on the reign of Mehmed II, particularly the years 1451 to 1481. You can stream it on Netflix.

Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror (2021)

This Netflix documentary series examines the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. It covers not only the attacks themselves but also their historical context and the long-term consequences that continue to shape the world today. The series consists of five episodes.
