Better Together: How to Build a Network at University

The university is not only a place of learning, but also offers a great opportunity to meet new people and establish valuable networks. These networks might even be valuable beyond your time at university. After all, friends and acquaintances often give you better chances of getting a good room in a shared flat or the next part-time job. In addition, it can be important for your professional future to build up a network of relevant contacts during your studies.

What to expect:

First things first:

  • Take advantage of the opportunities offered by your university: Orientation week, student organizations, research groups and many more offer you the opportunity to meet new people.
  • Social Networking: Digital platforms and forums offer the opportunity of connecting with like-minded people online.
  • Volunteering – alsooutside of university – broadens your horizon and gives you the opportunity to connect with new people outside of your usual bubble.

Introductory Events and Orientation Weeks

The first few weeks at university are probably the easiest time to meet new people. Many universities offer introductory events and orientation weeks that are specially designed to connect new students with each other. At introductory events, you will not only get to know your fellow students but you will also receive important information about the university and your field of study. Orientation weeks offer a variety of activities such as campus tours, workshops, and social events where you can easily make new friends.

Student Organizations and Associations

Helping hands are always welcome in the student council and committees. They enable you to actively shape university life and learn skills that look good on your CV. Other associations and groups offer the opportunity for joint leisure activities or study sessions.

  • Student councils and study groups consist of students from your department and offer academic support as well as social activities.
  • From sports clubs to theatre groups to political organisations – the variety of hobby and interest groups is vast. Find a group that matches your interests.
  • If you notice that you lack motivation or discipline, a study group can be a good solution for you. At the same time you will also get to know your fellow students in a more intimate setting than in class.
  • Career-related organizations offer you the opportunity to build professional networks and make important contacts that can help you plan your career.

Participation in Events and Workshops

In order to prepare you for professional life and make professionally relevant contacts, universities offer a variety of events and workshops that are not only instructive but also offer the opportunity to get to know like-minded people.

  • At career fairs and job fairs, you will have the opportunity to make contacts in the world of work and to get to know potential employers.
  • Guest lectures and seminars create a good setting to meet experts in your field and exchange ideas with other interested students.
  • Workshops and trainings teach you practical skills and a chance to work together intensively in small groups, getting to know your team members more closely.

Social Networking via Online Platforms

In the digital age, social networks and online platforms also offer many opportunities to connect on a professional level. LinkedIn and Xing are specifically geared towards professional networks and allow you to connect with fellow students, alumni and professionals. Many universities and degree programs have their own Facebook groups and forums where you can exchange ideas and network. Some of your courses might even offer forums and discussion groups on e-learning platforms where you can connect with other students.

Projects and Research

Your involvement in projects and research groups can not only provide you with academic advantages but also create valuable networks. Work with lecturers and fellow students on research projects and establish contacts with experts in your field. Get involved in projects organized by students. These often offer close cooperation and the opportunity to make new friends.

International Programs and Exchange Opportunities

Erasmus and other exchange programmes offer you the opportunity to build a network across national borders. You will spend a semester or year abroad and get to know students from all over the world. International Offices offer numerous events and support services for international students that can help you make new contacts.

Volunteering and Social Commitment

Volunteering and social commitment also offer you an opportunity to meet new people. And you are doing something good at the same time. Volunteer centers coordinate volunteer work in your city. Get involved in a wide variety of social projects and meet other committed students. Educationalinitiatives also offer social engagement programs that can help you expand your network.

Don’ts

Don’t be impatient: Building a network takes time. Above all, stable interpersonal relationships do not develop overnight. Don’t expect too much too quickly and take it easy.

Don’t overdo it: Student council, volunteer project, student group and workshops at the same time? Don’t take on too much. Try the different options one by one and manage your time and resources accordingly.

Don’t obsess over failures! The Facebook group is annoying and the study group can’t seem to set up a meeting? Don’t worry, it doesn’t always have to fit right away. Just keep trying out things and don’t give up!

Conclusion

Networking and socializing at university is not only important for your studies, but also for your personal and professional development. Take advantage of the numerous opportunities that your university offers to meet new people and establish valuable networks. Whether through student organizations, events, social networks or volunteer work – the possibilities are diverse and offer you the chance to enrich your studies and create valuable connections for the future.
