Am I allowed to publish my bachelor’s thesis or term papers from my studies?
Students are allowed to self-publish their academic papers. It does not matter, whether it is a term paper, bachelor thesis or another text. However, the work must meet a few requirements that an academic paper requires anyway. Below, we would like to give you an overview of some of these requirements.
What criteria does an academic paper have to meet, among other things, in order to be published?
- You have to be the creator
Hint: Therefore, the assignment of lecturers or the like may not be published without consent. - All information and materials obtained from third-party sources must be correctly substantiated and cited. In addition, illustrations may only be published within the framework of the right to quote. This means that the illustrations serve to gain knowledge and are not merely decorative.
- The rights to the text must belong to you. This is usually the case, if you have not agreed otherwise with your university or supervisor.
- The evaluation or grading process by your university must be completed. Until the official evaluation, the thesis is subject to the right of examination and may not be published.
- At private universities, in the case of dual courses of study or cooperation with companies, a publication must be clarified in advance. Please check your study or training contract – or inquire directly at your university or company.
- This goes without saying: your work must not contain any discriminatory or offensive content. In addition, you need the consent of the data subjects if you want to publish personal information that is subject to data protection. You also need consent for the publication of internal information from companies, institutions, etc.
