Experiences of a self-publishing author

What are the advantages of self-publishing and where do difficulties arise? We asked GRIN author Kira Glückert about her experiences and tips.

GRIN: Ms. Glückert, what is the name of your book? And can you summarize it in two to three sentences?

KG: My master’s thesis is called: “The change in learning culture as an opportunity for self-directed learning. How enabling didactics and learning coaching strengthen methodological competence”. Due to mechanization, learning has been undergoing a change for over 20 years, knowledge can become obsolete and therefore it is important that the students are given methods in addition to knowledge with which they can acquire new knowledge.

GRIN: Why did you choose self-publishing?

KG: Since my master’s thesis is an absolute topic close to my heart, it was very clear to me that I would like to publish this work. However, it is not so easy to find a publisher who publishes a master’s thesis.

GRIN: What advantage did you see with GRIN?

KG: What I particularly like about GRIN is that it costs nothing to publish a book and that you can publish the book – your own work – in different ways: as open access, as an e-book or even as a printed book.

GRIN: In your opinion, are there any particular difficulties in self-publishing?

KG: One problem with self-publishing is that you are on your own. It may be that you upload the work and then perhaps only realize when the book is published that you have many errors in the text and that the layout is not as you actually imagined.

GRIN: What advice would you give to other authors who are considering self-publishing?

KG: I would advise aspiring authors: if the topic to be published is a matter of the heart and a favorite topic with which you want to reach many people, it is best to book options so that you can take a closer look at the cover design and also the layout.

GRIN: Ms. Glückert, thank you very much for taking the time. We wish you continued success with your book!
