How to create sustainable order on your desk

Did spring cleaning uncover items you no longer need? Here are tips for decluttering, sharing, and swapping.

What to expect:

First things first:

  • The most important prerequisites for a successful clean-up operation are sufficient time and energy.
  • Things that you no longer need may still be useful to others.
  • It’s better to think twice about study materials to see if you might need them again.

How do you part with old things?

The most important factor is your mindset and planning when decluttering. Avoid spontaneous actions when you don’t have enough time. For instance, if you can’t find that one book from school, don’t throw out your entire bookshelf in a fit of productivity. Instead, take your time and focus on one specific area, like your bookshelf or desk. It’s also helpful to have folders ready for loose papers and enough bags or boxes for sorted-out materials.

When decluttering, consider what you might still need or want to keep for sentimental or practical reasons. Be honest with yourself and keep your goal in mind. If you aren’t willing to part with anything, the process will only create stress. However, study materials such as lecture notes may come in handy later in your academic journey. Only discard them if you’re absolutely sure you won’t need them. Reviewing your curriculum and upcoming modules can help you decide.

Personally, I find it useful to collect “maybe” items in a separate box and revisit them after a few days. This is especially helpful for sentimental items like old children’s books or school literature. In the days following your cleanup, imagine how you’d feel if those items were gone. If it doesn’t feel right, keep them for now. You might see things differently during your next cleanup session.

What should I do with sorted-out books and materials from my studies?

Don’t throw them away! If your old books are in good condition, pass them on to other readers. It’s sustainable and feels much better. Plus, knowing that someone else will enjoy a book you loved makes decluttering easier.

Student swapping events

Many student councils or university organizations host regular swap events. Books, in particular, can be donated here, and you might even pick up new reading material for yourself. Often, these events are completely free, or books are sold at a significantly reduced price. The proceeds can help fund great projects like conferences, workshops, or celebrations organized by your student council. Check your council’s newsletter, bulletin boards, or the university services website for information about upcoming events.

Public bookcases

There are now numerous public bookcases in most cities. Here you can easily offer your books for exchange. Public bookcases are anonymous and available at any time of the day or night. In addition, you do not have to follow any formalities.

Give away or donate

Want to part with an old crime novel and know a true crime fan in your circle? Gifts don’t always need to be new or tied to a special occasion to bring joy! Many charitable organizations also gladly accept book donations. Check with local churches, NGOs, or other organizations in your area.
